Calaveras Master Gardeners Demonstration Garden

891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas CA 95249

Phone: 209-754-2880

The demonstration garden is a wonderful resource for local gardeners, thanks to the hard work and dedication of many Master Gardeners over the past 20+ years.   Since its inception in 2002, new demonstration areas have been added and existing gardens have evolved.

The Demonstration Garden is located at 891 Mountain Ranch Road in San Andreas. In September 2002 this 0.6-acre plot was designated for Master Gardener use by the Board of Supervisors. The Demonstration Garden is the venue for many of the educational events and outreach activities offered to Calaveras County residents and visitors by Master Gardeners.  The garden consists of over 20 distinct garden areas, each with its own purpose or theme.

The garden is open to the public every Thursday, year-round.

March to October - 9am to 1pm

November to April - 10am to 2pm

Demonstration  Garden Areas

The garden consists of over 20 distinct garden areas, each with its own purpose or theme.

Vegetable Garden

The raised beds are constructed of cedar with ¼ inch hardware cloth on the bottom to keep gophers out.

Beds are planted with various crops throughout the growing seasons, which include both cool and warm vegetables and fruit.  Examples are: peppers, tomatoes, beans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, garlic, onions, corn, sunflowers, peas, and a variety of herbs.

Beds 13 and 14 contain perennial crops of artichokes and asparagus, which continue to produce each year.

The garden features demonstrations of various growing techniques suitable for home gardeners in Calaveras County.  The soil is tested at least once a year for different macro/micronutrients and amended according to those results.

Produce is shared with the community during Open Garden Gate, and the Senior Center across the street.

Hügelkultur

Bed 12, the newest bed in the vegetable garden, built in 2026, is a Hügelkultur, based on a centuries-old European style of garden bed. It is a 3 ½ foot deep pit, surrounded by cinder blocks with hardware cloth on the bottom and sides.  It is layered with small wooden logs, compost and soil.

Contemplation Garden

Originally a Mission Garden, this garden was redesigned as a Contemplation Garden in 2023.

This garden provides a space for rest and reflection, with plants designed to soothe the senses, including an extensive collection of lavenders. It is the venue for yoga in the garden.
